Are you catholic, but never received the Sacrament of Confirmation?
If you are interested in the reception of Confirmation contact Emily Weierman if you have questions!
Confirmation is a Catholic sacrament of mature Christian commitment and a deepening of baptismal gifts.
Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist are the sacraments of initiation into the Catholic Church. Confirmation is a deepening of baptismal gifts. This sacrament roots us more deeply in our identity as God’s children; unites us more firmly with Christ; increases in us the gifts of the Holy Spirit; binds us more closely to the Church; and gives us special strength to bear witness to our faith.
Even more than a sacrament of our commitment to God, Confirmation is the “seal” of God’s commitment to us. It marks us as God’s. It makes us a people set apart. God’s faithful promises provide the security from which we can promise fidelity; thus Church law requires, when possible, Confirmation before the sacraments of commitment – Marriage and Orders.
As believers, we have the Spirit, our God-breath, from Baptism. But the Spirit who was a soft, life-sustaining breath in us as infants is, at Confirmation, the breath behind speech. The Spirit is the power to raise our voices in witness. Thus, to be a godparent or sponsor, it is necessary to be fully initiated.
Sometimes as Catholics, we make it to adulthood having missed out on what Confirmation has to offer us. Bringing gifts like wisdom and fortitude, the Holy Spirit comes to us in Confirmation to strengthen us for our walk with Christ. He gives us understanding, knowledge, and counsel to provide us with spiritual insight and right judgment. He also gives us gifts to respond to God with fascination and devotion.
Who can afford to pass all this up? If you’re missing out because you missed Confirmation, join us for a three-part adult Confirmation preparation program scheduled during Lent so you can receive this sacrament at Easter Vigil.
